You need at least a day to visit. Make sure you see the winding house in the colliery area as the operative is amazing and worth the entrance fee on his own.

Get an annual ticket and visit in the afternoon on the first day, it'll probably be a bit quieter after. 2.00 as the school trips go home then. You can get your bearings ready for a full day the following day.

Buy tickets online to save queueing when you arrive. The queue for the bakery looked long but didn’t take a huge amount of time to get through. Don’t have your heart set on a particular item of food as when it’s gone it’s gone! Avoid the Pork Pie’s at all costs, they are filled with chunky meat that looked like dog meat, they did not taste good! The queue for Fish and Chips in the pit village takes around an hour when full. We arrived at 3pm and were told by staff that we may queue for an hour but might not actually get any food. When it’s gone it’s gone!
