Located just two miles from Swanage and situated in the grounds of Durlston Country Park, the Anvil Point Lighthouse is one of Dorset's most unique attractions. Sitting on Anvil Point and built from locally quarried stone, the lighthouse was completed in 1881 and opened by Joseph Chamberlain, father of the soon-to-be Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. There's plenty of good accommodation not far from the lighthouse, ranging from simple B&Bs and characterful inns, to upmarket lodges and hotels.
A Little Luxury: Hotels near the Anvil Point Lighthouse
Those looking to add a little luxury to their downtime will find that there are more than a few hotels that should meet their needs. The Kings Country Courtyard boasts incredible views of Corfe Castle, the beautiful Swanage Bay, and on a clear day you can see as far as the Isle of Wight. This can be booked for self-catering or as a bed and breakfast, giving you complete control over how you spend your leisure time. The Scott Arms offers equally luxurious accommodation set in a timber-beamed, traditional pub that's practically crackling with character.
B&Bs Worth Tunnelling Into
However, if you'd prefer something more modest, there's a wide selection of mid-range hotels close to the Anvil Point Lighthouse. The fabulously-named 'A Great Escape Guest House' offers high quality accommodation, along with 21st century perks, such as free WiFi and flat-screen TVs. It might even see you whistling the theme-tune to the film of the nearly-but-not-quite-the-same name!
Other Local Attractions
Anvil Point Lighthouse is occasionally open to the public for guided tours. However, in the event that it's closed or still in use, there are plenty of other attractions nearby, such as Corfe Castle and Durlston Castle. The Swanage Railway is only a short distance away, offering the chance to take a trip on a steam train as far as Norden. On a hot day, the idyllic seclusion of Lulworth Cove is ideal for those travelling with children; the beach is very safe and even offers opportunities for a spot of idle fossil hunting. You'll find some superb family-friendly hotels nearby, such as The Savoy Hotel in Bournemouth.
The Anvil Point Lighthouse is a fascinating attraction. However, with excellent accommodation in the area, you're free to explore the whole area at your own pace.
