Good Hotel with Friendly Service We visited the Melia Coral for 7 nights at the end of April/beginning of May 2016. The most obvious point to make is that the hotel is adults only, which really does make a pleasant change for those who want to avoid screaming kids! The hotel itself is very well run and clean. Our room was very good ...

A thoroughly enjoyable holiday. A15-20 min walk into the old town which is mainly uphill on the way back. The coast path which would have been easier and probably quicker was closed during our stay but due to be opened for the high season. A day trip on the local bus to the Roman antiquities in Pula ...

Pocket Guide: 5 stars Hotels in Istria

Book a five-star hotel in Istria and you’ll be in for something really special. The craggy Croatian peninsula juts out into the Adriatic, and is dotted with chic beach resorts, Mediterranean fishing villages and medieval hilltop towns. It attracts a well-heeled crowd who come for its luxury hotels, spa resorts and boutique lodgings.

Stunning Beaches, Great Sailing and Designer Shopping

As the largest peninsula on the Adriatic Coast, Istria is one of Croatia's most popular beach destinations, with swathes of white-pebble beaches and secret rocky coves lapped by warm, aquamarine waters. The region is renowned for its diving and sailing opportunities, as well as designer shopping and a burgeoning gourmet dining scene.

Where to Stay to Discover Croatian Art

Visit Umag, the cobbled old town of which boasts unrivalled views over the Adriatic Sea. Modern art fans will enjoy a browse around Gallery Marin, a contemporary art museum set in the old town walls which features celebrated Croatian and Slovenian artists. Witness the colourful frescoes in the town's 16th-century Church of St. Roch, or uncover local artefacts in Umag Town Museum, tucked away in a Renaissance tower.

Head off the beaten track to discover the region's lush interior, packed with quaint medieval hilltop villages and some of the best examples of Byzantine churches in Europe.

Popular Towns for Five-Star Accommodation in Istria

Widely regarded as the jewel in Istria's crown, Rovinj is a quaint old fishing town criss-crossed with cobblestone piazzas. Visit the baroque Church of Euphemia, which boasts a 60-metre-high bell tower and offers far-reaching views over the Rovinj archipelago of islands.

Further south lies Pula, Istria's main city, where the charming old town boasts the 2nd-century BC Pula Arena, one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world. From here you can easily visit the Brijuni Islands, a cluster of 14 islands which has protected national park status. Veli Brijuni is the largest and most accessible island – come to snorkel its crystal clear waters or take a private guided tour.
