Nestled between the lush Istrian peninsula and Croatia 's Dalmatian Coast, Rijeka International Airport, also known as RJK, offers easy access to Croatia's Kvarner Bay and the beach resorts of Istria. The airport is around two miles from the town of Omišalj, in the northern region of Krk island, and is operational all year round.
RJK airport is about 16 miles by car from Rijeka and 1 hour 20 minutes from Rabac, one of Istria's most popular beach resorts, while Pula, Istria's bustling main city is only 1 hour 40 minutes away by road. You can get easily from RJK airport to the mainland by taking the 120 road, which also offers direct access to the towns, Medieval villages and beach resorts of both Kvarner Bay and Istria. Expedia features many international airlines which fly to RJK airport, including Croatia Airlines, which flies direct to RJK from London Heathrow.
Make your holiday last longer by picking up some of Istria's finest exports, from good regional wines to locally made grappa, at the airport's duty free shop. If you’re waiting for a flight, you could dine in the restaurant or just toast your last hours of holiday in the airport bar. Should you want to enjoy your holiday right up to the very end, book into the VIP lounge. When you arrive at RJK airport, it’s easy to pick up a car hire or taxis when you land, or you could hop on a bus or shuttle to downtown Rijeka.
There are no airport hotels at RJK airport, but Omišalj has a handful of hotels and B&Bs accessible by airport bus or private taxi. Downtown Rijeka offers a variety of cheap hotels and guesthouses in the old town, or head further into Istria for sprawling beach resorts, family apartment hotels and self-catering villas surrounded by the sweeping beaches of Rabac.
Rijeka is a vibrant port tucked away on Kvarner Bay. Regarded as Croatia's third largest city, it's also the gateway to the Dalmatian coast and some of Kvarner Bay's 49 islands. Look beyond the busy port and you'll find a charming city offering stacks of Austro-Hungarian history and architecture, lively bars, and a modern dining scene with influences from Italy and the Mediterranean.
Overlooking Kvarner Bay on Istria's eastern coast, the charming town of Rabac is often referred to as the Pearl of Kvarner thanks to its lush surroundings, turquoise waters and sweeping white-pebble beaches. Rabac is the largest holiday resort on Istria's eastern coast, and has a variety of accommodation from boutique B&Bs and guesthouses to three- and four-star hotels with pools and spas. It's also a good base for visitors to Labin, a quaint former mining town perched on a hillside which now has modern art galleries, cool cocktail bars and many lively restaurants.
Wherever you decide to visit on your holiday to Istria and Kvarner, why not let Expedia help find the best flights and hotel accommodation for your budget.
