Officially named Sveti Andrija, the car-free, pine-fringed Red Island is a 15-minute boat ride from Rovinj. Forming part of the Rovinj archipelago of 14 lush green islands, it's actually split into two islets, Sveti Andrija and Maskin, which are joined together by a walkable causeway.
What Attractions Are There on Red Island?
The Red Island's quiet pebbly beaches and shallow, crystal-clear waters attract young families to the island. There's also a water sports centre offering windsurfing and sailing instruction, and a number of rocky coves perfect for snorkelling the colourful underwater reef which surrounds the island. In all, it’s a wonderful place to spend a day walking, exploring and relaxing in and out of the water – and there are excellent views back to the Istrian mainland.
Finding Accommodation on Red Island
The craggy, wooded island is entirely car-free and perfect for a day trip, but if you're tempted to stay longer there is accommodation available. Red Island’s only hotel is a large four-star complex with a marina and two outdoor pools.
Use Rovinj as a Base for Exploring Red Island
Most visitors to Red Island stay in the pretty resort of Rovinj on Istria's western coast. Widely regarded as the region's jewel in the crown, Rovinj is a charming Mediterranean town that is bursting with Croatian character. It’s a great choice for accommodation near Red Island, offering everything from mobile homes in woodland campsites to modern apartment complexes to chic boutique hotels in the old town.
Getting to Red Island from Rovinj
Regular water taxis carry visitors back and forth between Rovinj and Red Island, departing from a pier in the town centre and taking between 10 and 15 minutes. It’s a pleasant ride, offering good views of the Rovinj waterfront and of some of the other islands in the Rovinj archipelago.
With such easy access to the island, Rovinj makes a great base for Red Island accommodation – and it has an attractive old town and some fabulous local beaches too.
