Widely regarded as the jewel in Istria's crown, Rovinj is a charming Mediterranean town on the western coast. Brimming with Croatian character, it’s also the gateway to the Rovinj archipelago – 14 lush green islands which include Sveta Katarina and Crveni Otok, also known as the Red Island.

Rovinj is still a working fishing port, and every morning a colourful sweep of fishing boats bring their catch into the quaint harbour to a chorus of excitable gulls. From the harbour there's a daily ferry service to Venice and pleasure boat tours to St. Katherine's Island and Red Island.

Where to Stay When Visiting Rovinj

Many visitors opt to stay in the old town, a maze of quaint cobbled streets and piazzas or in nearby beach or woodland areas such as the Golden Cape. Rovinj is blessed with several attractive pebbled beaches that curl around the bay. Lone Bay, Moulin Rouge and Monte beaches are easily reached from the old town, while the popular Porton Bioni boasts attractive views of the Rovinj peninsula.

Food and Culture in Rovinj

The old town is easily explored on foot, which will enable you to browse the fabulous open-air market on Valdibora and pick up local truffles, fresh seafood and olive oil. Visit the art collections in the Rovinj Heritage Museum, a glorious baroque palace dating from the 17th Century.

Superb Views from Rovinj’s Church of Euphemia

Another popular attraction is the Church of Euphemia, the largest baroque-style building in Istria. Named after the town's patron saint, it dates back to 1736 and you can still see St. Euphemia's marble tomb tucked behind the altar. The church’s 60-metre bell tower dominates the Rovinj skyline, and for a few Croatian Kunas visitors can climb the tower for magnificent views of the archipelago.
