Learn more about Buxton

Venture to Wroxham Barns and Blickling Hall—just two of the sights around Buxton.

Pasture with ancient trees. On Dudwick estate. In 1198 the Dudwick estate was owned by Lord de Dudwik, who had the right, given to him by the King, to hang criminals; the gallows stood in the field beside Sandy Lane > 728068. Dudwick park was once populated by a herd of red deer, believed to be the oldest herd in Norfolk. The animals escaped during WWII and now populate the Marsham woods. In the 18th century the estate was owned by members of the Wright/Sewell families who lived in Buxton for many generations. Mary Wright, a sister of John Wright of (old) Dudwick House, was a famous author of children's books and her daughter Anna (1820-1878) became famous by writing Black Beauty > 667394 - 597716. http://www.buxton-norfolk.co.uk/h_houses.htm

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Buxton?
The best area to stay in Buxton is the town centre, particularly around the Pavilion Gardens and The Crescent.

This central area is the heart of Buxton, known for its elegant Georgian and Victorian architecture. You'll find many of the town's main attractions here, including the Buxton Opera House, the Devonshire Dome, and St Ann's Well. The streets are easy to navigate on foot, leading to a variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants.

Couples often find this area ideal for a relaxing break. You're perfectly placed to enjoy leisurely strolls through the Pavilion Gardens, take in a show at the Opera House, or explore the independent boutiques along Spring Gardens. There are also several excellent restaurants for a special evening out.

For those looking for a more tranquil stay with easy access to the town's natural beauty, the area just north of the town centre, towards the edge of the Peak District, offers a good balance. Here you'll find hotels and guesthouses with views of the surrounding hills, while still being a short walk from the main attractions.
When is the best time to go to Buxton?
The best time to go to Buxton is during the late spring and summer months, particularly from May to September, when the weather is generally mildest and most conducive to exploring.

These months offer the warmest temperatures, making it ideal for enjoying Buxton's outdoor attractions such as the Pavilion Gardens and the surrounding Peak District National Park. The longer daylight hours also allow for more extensive sightseeing and activities. This period is particularly good for couples or families who want to take advantage of the walking trails and open-air events.

For those interested in the arts and culture, July is a prime month as it hosts the Buxton International Festival, a significant event featuring opera, music, and literature. This makes July an excellent choice for visitors who appreciate a lively cultural calendar alongside the natural beauty of the area.

If you prefer fewer crowds and cooler, crisp weather, late April or early October can also be appealing.
