With snow pretty much guaranteed, Lapland holidays are the (Christmas) gift that keeps on giving. Not only is this the home of Santa Claus and Rudolph, here guests of all ages are free to explore Finland’s frosty grottos, glass igloos and cosy log cabins.
If frosty fells are more your style, you’ll find a laundry list of adrenaline-fuelled activities on offer too. From ice fishing in Rovaniemi to snowmobile tours of the Arctic Circle, Lapland might not be a typical Christmas skiing holiday, but it will certainly be first on your Christmas list next year.
A hit with families long before Home Alone took to the big screen, New York has got to be the most Christmassy place on the planet. Home to humongous twinkling hotels and larger-than-life festive performances (A Christmas Carol and the Nutcracker are some of the best), this city pulls out all the stops come December.
For the perfect NYC Christmas getaway, you’ll want to lace up your skates and head to Bryant Park Winter Village. Home to a 17,000 square-foot ice rink and more than 150 shops and vendors, you could be forgiven for thinking Lapland had landed in Manhattan.
For a holiday market with a European edge, however, head a few blocks south and you’ll find Union Square. This traditional market turns the clock back to yesteryear, with German wooden toys and charming handmade trinkets as just some of their unique offerings. Plus, when you feel the hunger pangs coming on, there are heaps of comfort foods to tuck into (Union Square’s gouda mac & cheese and lamb stew dishes are saviours on frosty nights).
Looking to get into the Yuletide spirit without the cold weather? With a Christmas holiday in the Caribbean you can spend the ‘most wonderful time of the year’ beachside with a glass of bubbly.
For some of the best Christmas festivities, head to Barbados. Or, more specifically, Queen’s Park in Bridgetown. Lined by leafy baobab trees, this park marches to the beat of its own steel drum come Christmas time. Fierce fashion shows, live Reggae music and a hearty festive lunch (trimmings include pigeon peas and guinea corn) are just some of the highlights.
If, on the other hand, you prefer Salsa music with your sprouts, fly north west of Barbados to the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. Here, Christmas (or Navidad) is celebrated firstly with street-wide carol-singing (known as parrandas) and Midnight Mass (Misa de Gallo). After dawn, however, Salsa music drowns out traditional tunes and the partying begins - many go long into the night, and some even run until mid-January!
Dubai is a dream Christmas getaway for those on the hunt for winter sun. Not only does it boast award-winning beaches (perfect for Boxing Day relaxing), there are also plenty of snow-themed activities to get stuck into as well.
Yes, you read that right. Despite its desert climate, Dubai Christmas holidays come ready-made with traditional frosty favourites. The Festive Market at Souk Madinat Jumeirah is one of the grandest attractions during December, with snow parties, chocolate-making classes and Santa-led abra rides a festive treat for the whole family.
If you’d prefer to adorn your skis this December, head to Ski Dubai in Meydan City.Spread over 22,500metres, this indoor resort offers not just world-class skiing and snowboarding runs, but also bobsleighing courses and the world’s first sub-zero zip line. Phew!
Want a holiday where the only thing cold is your drinks glass? Take your suitcase (and your sun cream) to Mexico. On a Mexico Christmas holiday, guests are treated like royalty, with many of the peninsula’s 5-star hotels offering beach butler services and on-demand spa treatments. When the sun sets, however, it’s time to pull on your dancing shoes and head to Guadalajara. Offering much more than mariachi music, Guadalajara houses some of the biggest clubs (and best all-night parties) in the country, with Bar Américas a favourite amongst the locals.
If you have your heart set on Asia, there’s nowhere more magical than Thailand.Known as the Land of Smiles, the friendly locals truly outdo themselves during December (they love to wish “Merry Christmas” to passersby). What’s more, when it’s time to tuck into Christmas dinner on your Thailand Christmas holiday, mouth-watering dishes, such as Massaman and Panang curries, are a delicious alternative to turkey.
