Claim It: Queensland Hotels for Surfers

“Dream of consistent swell, endless sun and warm waters you can surf in your boardies? Surfing in Australia is a very different proposition from Europe, with a huge range of breaks that work year-round often within an hour’s drive of each other. Add in the laidback, beach-centric lifestyle that prevails here and you’ve got a destination that’s worth travelling halfway around the world for. There are legendary spots all over the country, but Queensland is where the typical sun-sand-and-surf experience is at its purest, with the warmest weather and a huge stretch of coastline. Here are five hotels in perfect spots for surfing in Queensland.

Noosa Heads Motel, Noosa Heads
——————————-

Noosa Heads is one of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular surf spots, with a big range of breaks from near the town and slightly further afield via walks through Noosa National Park, including Alexandria Bay. Noosa Heads Motel is well-located for all the nearby beaches and is easy distance from the town, with parking available.

Rainbow Ocean Palms Resort, Rainbow Beach
——————————————

Rainbow Beach supposedly has one of the longest waves in Australia. It can get busy, but it’s worth stopping in here as Rainbow Beach is also one of the two departure points for reaching Fraser Island (along with Hervey Bay to the north). Best of all for surfers, to the south is Double Island Point, an unusually quiet point break with long rights. Rainbow Ocean Palms Resort has rooms with fantastic ocean views so you can keep a close eye on conditions if you’re truly obsessive.

Q1 Resort & Spa, Surfers Paradise
———————————-

Surfers Paradise is a bit of a misnomer – the beach here is really more about swimming and sunbathing, though on its day it can be a lot of fun, around the crowds. But it does have the advantage of plenty of accommodation – there are more hotels in Surfers Paradise than you can shake a quad-fin at, so it makes a good base for exploring the breaks around the Gold Coast and beyond. Q1 Resort & Spa has parking available if you’re planning to drive around.

A’Montego Mermaid Beach Motel
——————————

If you are road tripping and just want simple places to stay between missions you can find plenty of unfussy hotels and motels the length of the Queensland coast – this is backpacker central, after all. A’Montego Mermaid Beach Motel is a couple of minutes’ walk from the ocean in Mermaid Beach, a quieter suburb than the built-up northern stretches of the Gold Coast.

Mango Tree Motel, Agnes Water
——————————

The neighbouring towns of Agnes Water and 1770 are the final frontier in Queensland surfing – waves pretty much stop breaking north of here as the Great Barrier Reef begins and blocks most swell (which is definitely not to say that you can’t find decent breaks in North Queensland). They’re a nice pair of typically laidback, funky little towns with pretty consistent waves from the main beach in Agnes Water up to 1770. Mango Tree Motel is moments’ walk from the beach in Agnes Water – ideal for a last hurrah if you’re travelling north and want to get your final surf fix before you hit the reef.
