Two hours north of Vancouver, Whistler is the largest ski area in North America and offers a host of activities throughout the year. From summer alpine trails and winter sports to fine dining and spa resorts, there’s something for everyone and accommodation to suit.
If you love skiing, it doesn’t get much better than Whistler. Host to the 2010 Winter Olympics, the town is at the bottom of Blackcomb and Whistler mountains – two of the highest mountains in North America. Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced skier, there’s terrain for all abilities here and over two hundred runs to choose from. Whistler offers a range of other sports from cross-country skiing and heli-skiing to activities suitable for all the family: sleigh rides, ice-skating and dog sledding to name a few. You’ll find hotels in Whistler’s Upper Village within easy reach of the chairlifts and best placed for Blackcomb Mountain. Many of these are ski-in/ski-out resorts, which cater perfectly for winter holidays. Meanwhile accommodation in Whistler Village centre is closer to Whistler Mountain and the village’s buzzing apres-ski.
The landscape surrounding Whistler really comes to life in the summer months, with wildflowers coming into bloom and forests and glacial lakes to explore. High-altitude alpine trails wind through the rugged backcountry and have some breath-taking views for bikers and hikers alike. Whistler Whistler Mountain Bike Park is famed for its adventurous routes, while Alta Lake, Lost Lake and Alpha Lake and local rivers have a host of water sports to enjoy from canoeing excursions to white-water rafting. Outside the winter season, Whistler is also popular with golf enthusiasts and has four award-winning courses around the village.
Packed with shops, bars and restaurants, the pedestrian-only Whistler Village, has plenty to keep visitors entertained. From friendly cafes and pizzerias to oyster bars and gourmet restaurants, the cuisine here is decidedly international. There’s a vibrant nightlife with pubs, clubs and live music, and if you’d like to explore the culture of the region, there are plenty of galleries and some fascinating museums: the Squamish Lil’wat cultural centre in the Upper Village is well worth a visit.
Whistler really caters for every holiday goer, whether you’re after the thrill of winter sports or simply soaking up the views. The more luxury high-end hotels can be found around the bustling Village centre, with direct access to both Blackcomb and Whistler mountains. There are also smaller boutique hotels in the Village North area while the Upper Village has a quieter night-life and a range of ski-in/ski-out condos.
There’s an abundance of holiday accommodation in Whistler to suit every budget. Whether you opt for a romantic getaway with hot tub and pool, a cosy alpine lodge or a hotel that puts you within easy reach of the slopes, finding a room with a view will be easy in this stunning resort.
