We stayed for five nights at NYLO Hotel, 77th and Broadway. A great location as a base of operations for sightseeing in NYC. Nice place, very comfortable, cool sort of industrial/chic ambiance, friendly staff.
The Lucerne Hotel was everthing we hoped for and more. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the accommodations are elegant and comfortable and the adjoining restaurant is very good (an after play coffee and creme brule is a perfect ending to the day!) The location provides an array of delicious restaurants and coffee shops. Our group is already planning our next trip.
There are many things we liked about this hotel. It starts with the overall appearance and style. From the outside it is beautiful and that just continues through the lobby and into the rooms and hallways. It has a kind of majestic feel but on a small and cozy scale. The rooms are clean and very spacious with a nice mix of old and new. Nicely decorated with wood tones and colors that really pop. The view of the Hudson from our room was amazing. Best we've ever had in New York. And the neighborhood is great. Quiet but lively. Lots to do close by with parks, restaurants, and shopping of all kinds. On the street below the hotel are cafes, coffee shops, and the Westside Market which is amazing. There is also a café right inside the hotel which is nice for coffee and pastries. And the staff puts out fresh drinks every evening, tea, juice, water, etc. This was a really nice touch.
Be sure to check out the Boat Basin Café. An open-air restaurant with good casual food and great views of the river. Serafina across the street is a great place for breakfast and so was Sugar and Plumm a couple blocks away. It's a short walk to Central Park and Riverside Park, museums, and other nice restaurants. The subway is pretty close also. About two blocks.
Stayed here when we were going to the Metropolitan Opera - across the street. Perfect location. My gripe is no free Wifi in the rooms - really? The staff was friendly, room was comfortable (by NYC standards). No heat in the building on a surprisingly chilly October weekend. Not their fault. Would stay here again.
The Excelsior is an older hotel, but well kept and close to subway, Central Park and numerous restaurants. The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. Spent four nights there and would not hesitate to stay there again.
Some bemoan that the Upper West Side has become a version of the Upper East Side. Case in point: Columbus Circle’s Time Warner Center, one of New York’s priciest real estate. The Upper West Side includes the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the American Museum of Natural History, and Columbia University. Harlem, the legendary African American neighborhood, lies north and caps Manhattan.
