    The Bowery House is a hostel in Lower Manhattan [downtown) and therefore very economical. It is located in an area that was once considered very undesirable but is now becoming popular for may reasons. There is still very visible poverty, drug use, and other social issues (the Bowery Mission is directly across the street) but there is a heavy police presence and a lot of traffic so even though I was a solo female aged 75 years, I never felt unsafe. There are several excellent restaurants in the area and if you like shopping (not really my thing) there are also many interesting shops in which to browse and perhaps purchase a wide variety of merchandise - everything from souvenirs to quality fashion. The Bowery House is also very close to public transit that can take you to most anywhere you might like to visit within the boroughs of New York City.…
