Kawaguchiko Hotel

10/10 Excellent

"Good location."

Wakakusa no Yado Maruei Ryokan

10/10 Excellent

"I loved every minute of my stay. Amazing place, beautiful views and very kind staff. I was so happy that the dinner was served in my room, such a unique experience. Special thanks to Kubota who served our dinner and was so very kind to explain every dish for us. You're the best! Can't wait to comeback!"

Kasuitei Ohya

10/10 Excellent

"When I was looking for a place to stay in Fuji I knew I wanted the authentic Japenese ryokan experience and this was definitely exceeded expectations. The room was extremely clean with practical features, such as air conditioning, air humidifier, extra toiletries and bedding. We had a view of the lake and it was beautiful. If you stay, I highly recommend doing the half board, where breakfast and dinner is included! It was so cool to have your room flipped around to a dining experience. We also used the onsen- both private and public. Very cool to try, everything that is offered felt clean and unique if you’ve never been before. The location was also ideal, being near the lake and a ton of local landmarks. This stay is by a lot of bike rentals- recommend doing this as well if you stay! Kasuitei Ooya also felt very modern even though its been there for decades! Highly recommend in comparison to other stays in the area :)"

Lakeland Hotel Mizunosato

10/10 Excellent

"Roof top Fuji view is great. Kimono offering and public bath is wonderful. Has some difficulty to find out about transportation nearby. Lack of clear information. Hotel shuttle has no other stops. Made it difficult to get around the areas other than calling uber. Food are good but do not know what is on the menu. Overall very good experience"

Fuji View Hotel

8/10 Good

"We stayed in a Japanese style room for three nights. The room was larger than expected with a fabulous view of Mount Fuji (weather permitting). Futon beds were very comfortable with additional mattresses available if required. Excellent shower in the bathroom. Breakfast: a huge choice of breakfast food, but very busy at opening time (7.30 am). We had a Japanese meal in the restaurant which was average when compared to some of the restaurants we ate at in in town. Would suggest booking in advance if wanting to eat at the hotel. Our preferred slot of 19.45 was full booked when we arrived. The hotel is located about 3.5Km from Kawaguchi-Ko. The hotel shuttle bus runs between the hotel and the station at Kawaguchi-Ko on an hourly basis. The bus is a minibus seating about 20 people, so if you want to use the shuttle bus early booking is highly recommended as it fills up fast. Positives: Very friendly and helpful staff Amazing views of Mount Fuji Rooms are large and comfortable. Negatives Distance from Kawaguchi-Ko town and lack of transport (buses and taxis) after 8pm can mean it's a long walk home if you choose to eat in the town. rrrestaurants"

HOSHINOYA Fuji

10/10 Excellent

"We absolutely loved our stay at Hoshinoya Fuji. From start to finish the experience was amazing, with incredible staff and amenities. Our taxi dropped us to the main reception area where we checked in, selected backpacks for our stay (containing useful gear for hiking and being in the outdoors!) and then were driven up to our room. You can call anytime for a car to take you from the main property back down to the reception area (or vice versa) so whether you wanted to be fully immersed or able to explore the area, you could. The room itself was spacious, light and clean with a gorgeous huge window to hopefully view Fuji, as well as a balcony with table, fire and sofa. The hotel has many options for activities and food, over our stay we enjoyed the music and bonfire session, canoeing on the lake, breakfast on our balcony (which was a particular standout!) and dinner at the restaurant. Every experience was incredible, and we really felt so immersed in the outdoors. Our stay was two nights and we opted to go out and explore around the area as well as enjoy the hotel amenities, but I feel you could easily spend three or four days purely on the hotel grounds and enjoying all they have to offer. We were lucky enough to get two clear days of visibility of Fuji which made the stay even more perfect, but we would’ve still loved our stay based on the property alone. We would encourage anyone to stay here if your itinerary allows!"

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Umegashima Onsen?

For a truly authentic and relaxing onsen experience in Umegashima Onsen, staying directly within the village of Umegashima is the best option.

This small, traditional village is located deep within the mountains and is famed for its natural hot springs. The main area consists of a collection of ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) and a few local eateries, all within easy walking distance of each other. The Abe River runs through the village, and the sound of the flowing water adds to the peaceful atmosphere.

Couples looking for a tranquil escape will find Umegashima ideal. The focus here is on relaxation, enjoying the natural beauty, and indulging in the onsen tradition. Many ryokans offer private onsen baths, and the village provides a great base for gentle strolls along the river or to nearby waterfalls.

For solo travellers seeking a peaceful retreat and a taste of traditional Japanese hospitality, Umegashima village offers a welcoming environment where one can unwind and disconnect.

When is the best time to go to Umegashima Onsen?

The best time to go to Umegashima Onsen is during the autumn months, from late October to mid-November, for stunning foliage, or in spring, from April to May, for pleasant weather and fresh greenery.

Autumn is particularly popular for its spectacular display of changing leaves. The mountain slopes surrounding the onsen towns transform into a rich tapestry of red, orange, and gold. This period offers a beautiful backdrop for enjoying the outdoor hot springs and taking leisurely walks along the Abe River. It's an ideal time for couples looking for a romantic escape amidst natural beauty.

Spring offers mild temperatures and clear skies, making it great for those who enjoy hiking and exploring the natural surroundings without the intense heat of summer. The new growth brings a fresh, vibrant green to the landscape, and the air is crisp. Families might find this time appealing for outdoor activities and comfortable sightseeing.

While winter brings snowy landscapes, which can be picturesque for a cosy onsen experience, access can sometimes be challenging due to heavy snowfall.
