The Fujiya Hotel

10/10 Excellent

"Great old time hotel. Beautiful garden. Were large room well appointed. It is so good to be able to open a window. Good size (like full) 2 beds, excellent mattress. Bathroom is great even by Japanese standards. Spa treatments definitely a plus. Terrific stuff, competent and eager to help. Restaurant was ok. Bus stop was across the street."

10/10 Excellent

"The hotel setting is absolutely beautiful, the staff extra lovely and helpful, the breakfast and dinner included were fabulous . I chose a room without the lake view and would upgrade next time but pure was still lovely . The onsen was relaxing and cocktails overlooking the footpath great. It was a wonderful adventure from Tokyo to Hakone on the Romancecar train then the switchback train and cable cars to the hotel and good that a direct bus can take you back if time is short . The Hakone free pass is well worth it and includes the Pirate ship cruise , such fun. I would also recommend the amazing luggage delivery service . We had bigger bags sent from Tokyo to our next stop after Hakone being Kyoto, such an efficient system , so travelled light to Hakone but even so , we forwarded our bags from Hakone station to the hotel for a small fee, freeing us up for the journey there and allowing us to enjoy the Open Air Museum hands free . That place is well worth the visit . So lovely . All in all a memorable stay highly recommended ."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Subashiri?

The best area to stay in Subashiri is near the Subashiri 5th Station, especially for those planning to climb Mount Fuji.

This area is primarily focused on providing amenities and a starting point for climbers. You'll find a selection of mountain lodges and guesthouses directly at or very close to the 5th Station, which is the highest point accessible by car on the Subashiri trail. This allows for early starts and minimises travel time on the day of your ascent.

For serious hikers and climbers, staying directly at the 5th Station is ideal. It offers immediate access to the Subashiri climbing trail, allowing for acclimatisation and an early start to avoid crowds and maximise daylight. These accommodations often provide basic but comfortable facilities tailored to climbers, such as meal plans and gear storage.

For those looking for a more relaxed experience with views of Mount Fuji without the full climb, staying in a guesthouse slightly further down the mountain, still within easy reach of the 5th Station by a short drive or bus, offers a good balance.

When is the best time to go to Subashiri?

The best time to visit Subashiri is during the climbing season, which typically runs from early July to early September, or in late spring (May to June) and early autumn (late September to October) for cooler weather and fewer crowds.

The climbing season is ideal if you're planning to ascend Mount Fuji via the Subashiri trail. During this period, the mountain huts are open, and transportation services to the 5th station are readily available. The weather at lower elevations is warm and pleasant, though it can still be cold and unpredictable on the mountain itself. This time of year is excellent for active travellers and those looking for a clear path to the summit.

For those who prefer to enjoy the scenery and local attractions without the intensity of a mountain climb, late spring offers comfortable temperatures and the chance to see fresh greenery. Early autumn provides crisp air, beautiful foliage, and generally fewer visitors than the peak summer months.
