Find hotels in Ruato from £46

The best area to stay in Ruato is along the scenic waterfront of Lake Rotoiti, particularly near the settlement of Mourea and the surrounding bays.

This area is the heart of Ruato, offering direct access to the lake and its many activities. It's characterised by holiday homes, lodges, and a few boutique accommodations spread along the lakeside roads, providing a tranquil setting with stunning water views. The main road, State Highway 30, runs close by, offering easy access to Rotorua and other Bay of Plenty attractions.

For families, staying in one of the holiday homes or lodges around Mourea is an excellent choice. These properties often come with private jetties or beach access, great for swimming, kayaking, or fishing directly from your accommodation. The calmer waters of Lake Rotoiti are ideal for children, and many homes offer spacious grounds for outdoor activities.

Couples looking for a peaceful retreat will appreciate the more secluded bays like Okawa Bay or Gisborne Point. Here, you'll find boutique lodges that often provide private balconies with lake views, opportunities for romantic boat trips, and access to walking trails.

The best time to visit Ruato is during the summer months, from December to February, when the weather is warm and sunny, great for enjoying the region's outdoor activities.

During this period, you'll find average temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), making it ideal for swimming, kayaking on Lake Rotoiti, or exploring the many walking trails. This is also when the lake is at its most inviting, and you can comfortably spend time on the water.

For those who prefer a slightly quieter experience with pleasant weather, the shoulder seasons of autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) are also excellent choices. Temperatures are milder, typically between 15°C and 20°C (59°F to 68°F), and there are fewer crowds, providing a more relaxed pace. This is a great time for couples looking for a peaceful getaway, perhaps enjoying a scenic walk through the Redwood Forest or unwinding in a geothermal hot pool without the peak season bustle.

While winter (June to August) is cooler and wetter, with temperatures around 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F), it can still be a good time to visit if you're interested in geothermal attractions and cosy evenings by a fire.
