For more than 100 years, Moscow’s Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts has been expanding its outstanding collection of international art. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the very large impressionist and post-impressionist collection, one of the most spectacular in the world.
Spend hours exploring the displays from the museum’s more than 670,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures, applied artworks, archaeological artifacts, coins and photographs. With paintings and sculptures from over 20 countries, many of the world’s favorite artists are represented.
Located in a separate building for 19th- and 20th-century European and American Art are the impressionist and post-impressionist collections. See colorful pieces, such as Degas’ beautiful Blue Dancers and van Gogh’s The Red Vineyard. Peruse works by Monet, Cezanne, Renoir, Pissarro, Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse and many others.
Visit the sculpture department, which ranges from Ancient Civilizations through the 20th century. Admire Antoine-Louise Barye’s numerous bronze statues, including Theseus and the Minotaur.
The Museyon is the Pushkin Museum’s education for children, with hands-on workshops and teaching, conducted in Russian. Kids and the whole family will appreciate the bright gleam of the coins in the numismatics section.
Applied arts include candelabra, armchairs and an ornate French carved wooden tabernacle. Ancient arts and archaeological artifacts round out the museum’s vast collections.
The Ionic-colonnaded building was designed by Roman Klein. Note how the interior designs change in structure and décor to match the period of the artworks presented.
For cultural delights for the ears as well as the eyes, time your visit to enjoy Svyatoslav Richter’s December Evenings, an international music festival held annually at the Pushkin Museum. Enjoy the museum’s winter approach with a blanket of white snow covering the pine trees lining the pathway to the entrance.
The main building of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts on Volkhonka Street is open from late morning through evening every day except Monday. Children under 18 are admitted free. Check the website for times and admission for other departments. Reach the museum via a short walk from the Kropotkinskaya metro stop, in front of the impressive gold-domed Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.
