Piazza Lauro is a little oasis in the heart of Sorrento. The oblong plaza is full of trees and is surrounded by shops and apartment buildings. Come to Piazza Lauro to sit, relax and watch locals going about their day.
In the morning, pop into one of the nearby cafés for a coffee and a sfogliatella frolla, a round fruit and ricotta pastry that was invented in the region. Sit below the palm trees in the square, watching the early light filter through the leaves as the city slowly wakes up. Look through a guide book to put together a plan for your day of sightseeing, then set off down the street towards the Circumvesuviana station, which offers connections to the seaside and Sorrento’s Old Town.
Return to Piazza Lauro in the evening, when nearby restaurants come alive with locals and tourists dining out. Relax with a glass of wine or a negroni, looking up at the modernist architecture that sets the square apart. Built in the 1970s, the square and its surroundings are examples of the style of architecture used in the renewal of southern Italy in the second half of the 20th century. Chat, watch the dusk descend and the lights of the city turn on, then stroll back into the city through the nearby Parco Lauro.
The Piazza Lauro is in central Sorrento. Walk here in 3 minutes from Sorrento’s principal train station or in 15 minutes from the ferry terminal. There is a bus stop across the street which provides connections throughout the town and the area. Limited metered parking is available on nearby streets or in a few parking garages. Piazza Lauro is accessible all day, every day.
