Pocket Guide: Orange County

Orange County may not have a world-class city within its county limits—which stretch from the Pacific Ocean to the Santa Ana Mountains—but it doesn't need one. It has Disneyland. It has some of the nation's best surfing beaches. It even has its own TV series, in the shape of "The OC". Most of all, though, it has that positive, feel-good factor that Southern California is rightly famed for—something most visitors find infectious.

With its warm, sunny climate, it isn't just the theme parks and beaches that are popular with visitors. Aside from all the fun to be had in its small cities, the hills and mountains in the south-east call out to be biked, hiked or just road-tripped. But Orange County isn't the easiest place to navigate, particularly when it comes to finding hotel accommodation. Here at Expedia.co.uk, though, we've done the hard work. We can give you the low-down on the best hotel districts for your special trip to Orange County.

Top of the list has to be the dream factory that is Disneyland. Its famed spires can be found on the edge of the city of Anaheim, in the north of Orange County. As you might expect, that small city and its surrounds are packed with hotels catering for those bound for the Magic Kingdom. Most are aimed at families, being mid-ranked and medium-sized establishments. But there are many smaller, cheaper hotels, too—some quite close to Disneyland.

Anaheim also has a major convention centre nearby, so many of the swankier hotels cater to business visitors. Then, there's the other big SoCal-themed attraction, in neighbouring Beuna Park, called Knott's Berry Farm. This may not be as well-known, but it packs in 7 million visitors each year. They stay in the local city's score or so hotels and motels. These are not as well-appointed as some of those in Anaheim, but rates are much cheaper. Also, here you are closer to LA's airport, and to LA proper.

Time to hop to the coast, where Orange County has three major beaches. These serve up a diverse range of accommodation for visitors. Newport Beach, close to John Wayne Airport, probably has the best reputation. The hotels near the beach are a mixed bunch, though—both five-star quality hotels and somewhat less swanky lodgings (< a href="https://www.expedia.co.uk/Balboa-Pier-Hotels.0-l6159097-0.Travel-Guide-Filter-Hotels">along the Balboa Boulevard). Prices here are generally high, especially in the truly exclusive hotel resorts of the San Joaquin Hills.

Giving Newport a close run for its money, Laguna Beach—on the other side of the San Joaquin Hills—is a plush Orange County District that is full of classy hotels. There are some truly elegant resorts and hotels stretching along this coast's cliffs: some are high-priced and some are more sensibly priced. Laguna is famed not only for its wealth, but for its long-running arts festivals and history-steeped theatre.

Finally, as an antidote to all that culture and class, there's always Huntington Beach, Orange County's "Surf City". This place is deeply steeped in surfing culture and has a great many backpacker and adventure-seeker lodgings, where high-quality service makes way for low prices (and access to the beach). There are also some bigger, better appointed hotels, looking to family and business customers. So even Surf City caters to the indulgent side of accommodation needs. But what else would you expect here in the OC?
