Deep within the Japanese island of Hokkaido’s western peninsula, perched on the dormant volcano of Mt. Yotei, lies the snowy town of Niseko. The village’s position here on the “Mt. Fuji of Hokkaido” puts it amid a multitude of snow-centric resorts, which is the reason why many travellers arrive here. Golf courses and hot springs also pepper slopes in the area, so even those who don’t fancy the white stuff still have plenty of options. And by booking a room in any of the hotels in Niseko, you’ll be able to enjoy all of the attractions with ease.
Whether you’d rather stay in budget motel or at one of the nicest Niseko ski resorts, the choice is yours. There are local options to suit all sorts of tastes, and since many of the Niseko hotels are part of ski resorts themselves, you could be swooshing down the mountain within minutes of leaving your room.
The nearest landing strip to the Niseko area is at the Sapporo Chitose Airport, which is roughly 40 km south-east of the slopes. From there, you can either arrange a car hire or catch a bus transfer up to the mountain. Depending upon weather conditions, though, the bus might not be the quickest way to start carving powder. During the peak season, which runs from late November through early May, the Hokkaido Access Network Resort Liner operates for 12 hours daily, making it easy to put your lift ticket to use without waiting too long. A bullet train is planned for the area, though it isn’t expected to be completed until 2035. In the meantime, you can call any number of local taxi or limousine services for trips to nearby destinations in the Niseko area.
