Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Kannawa Onsen?
The best area to stay in Kannawa Onsen is Kannawa Onsen itself, which is the heart of the hot spring district, known for its unique steam vents and traditional inns.

This area is easily identifiable by the constant plumes of steam rising from the ground, particularly around the Jigoku-mushi Kobo (steam cooking facility) and the numerous traditional ryokans. It's a compact area, making it very walkable, and the main street, Kannawa Ginza, offers a selection of local eateries and souvenir shops.

For couples seeking a traditional Japanese hot spring experience, Kannawa Onsen is ideal. Staying here means you're right in the middle of the onsen culture, with many ryokans offering private baths and exquisite kaiseki (multi-course) dinners. You can easily stroll to the various "hells" (Jigoku Meguri) like Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) and Oniishi Bozu Jigoku (Monk's Head Hell) which are unique geothermal spectacles.

Families will also find Kannawa Onsen a good choice, especially if they appreciate a relaxed pace. The convenience of having hot spring facilities within their accommodation, often with family-friendly rooms, makes it comfortable.
When is the best time to go to Kannawa Onsen?
The ideal times to visit Kannawa Onsen are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) months.

Spring offers mild temperatures, typically ranging from 10°C to 20°C, making it very comfortable for exploring the onsen town on foot and enjoying the outdoor foot baths. The scenery is particularly pleasant with cherry blossoms blooming in late March to early April, adding a lovely touch to the area's natural beauty. This season is superb for couples seeking a relaxing and picturesque getaway.

Autumn also provides agreeable weather, with temperatures similar to spring, usually between 10°C and 20°C. The changing leaves create stunning natural backdrops, especially around the nearby Beppu-Jigoku (Hell Valley) tours.
