Pocket Guide: Hull

Hull has always been one of the north-east's favourite cities, but in recent years its popularity has risen dramatically. Dubbed the United Kingdom's city of culture for 2017, Hull is a vibrant location that has plenty on offer for visitors. From large-scale rock concerts to amateur plays, there's all manner of things to see and do in the county town of the East Riding of Yorkshire. As the county's only real urban area, Hull is also home to many of its finest hotels.

Shopping in Hull

There are plenty of sweet little independent shops dotted around the streets of Hull, but the majority of the town's shopping happens in one place - the Princes Quay Shopping Centre. Built into Hull Marina on stilts above the water, the shopping centre has plenty of character and is packed with retail outlets.

The Holiday Inn at Hull Marina is the obvious choice if proximity to the shopping centre is important to you. The 3-star hotel offers affordable rates and even an indoor pool.

Historical Attractions

For history buffs, there are plenty of attractions dotted around the East Riding of Yorkshire, some of the best of which are situated in Hull. The undisputed highlight is the Wilberforce House Museum, which details the life of Hull's much-loved MP, who for years fought adamantly against the evils of the slave trade.

Concerts

As the United Kingdom's city of culture and one of the largest cities in the north-east, Hull sees its fair share of travelling bands, spanning all genres. There are loads of small venues around the city, but the bulk of the bigger names play at the Ice Arena. The unique venue also serves as the home for the city's ice hockey teams, which are surprisingly popular and quite successful!

Corporate Events

Hull isn't only a hit with tourists, it's also a thriving centre for business. There are plenty of hotels in the East Riding of Yorkshire (and Hull, particularly) which offer conference spaces for mid-sized events. Larger corporate events tend to take place at the home of Hull City FC - the KC Stadium.

The Mercure Royal Hotel is perfectly located for accessing the KC Stadium. The hotel also features its own conference space and has free WiFi throughout, making it an all-round excellent choice for business guests.
