Part of the appeal of Higgs Beach, is that it is slightly further away from other Key West beaches and the busy tourist centre of the city, in a more residential part of the island. Nevertheless, you’ll still easily be able to find accommodation to suit you, maybe a stylish bungalow or elegant resort just a short walk away from the beach.
Look for accommodation along the main road of Truman Avenue or on the streets around South Beach; you’ll find clusters of hotels and guest houses at a range of prices in both locations. To the east, accommodation near the airport gives you quick access to both the beach and international transport links.
Without the glamour of Smathers Beach or the easy access of South Beach, Higgs Beach is often unfairly forgotten by visitors to Key West. That makes it pleasingly quiet and you are almost always guaranteed to find your own patch of sand overlooking the peaceful ocean. Hire a beach chair from a stand by the beach and linger for a whole day beneath the hot Florida sun.
When you need to cool off, go for a swim by the pier where you might even catch sight of stingrays swimming alongside you.
The concessions stand on Higgs Beach offers more than just sun loungers – you can also arrange a day of sporting fun here. Use one of the kayaks to paddle out onto the Atlantic Ocean or hire a pair of goggles and a snorkel for a glimpse of the underwater life just off the beach. The staff at Higgs Beach can also help to organise dolphin-watching tours, parasailing expeditions and fishing charters.
There is lots of fun to be had on land, too. Set up a volleyball net and challenge your friends and family to a game. After working up a sweat, you can use the outdoor shower to rinse off.
Although it is a relatively popular destination, Higgs Beach still feels like an undiscovered treat alongside Key West’s other big hitters.
