Pocket Guide: Marathon

Visit Marathon in the Florida Keys

Marathon is a bustling community island stretching ten miles long in the middle of the Florida Keys chain. The wonderfully-named Vaca Key, Grassy Key and Fat Deer Key form the core of the chain, where a long and proud fishing heritage and seafaring traditions live on to this day.

Everything revolves around the ocean on Marathon, from the fresh crab, lobster and fish that are served in the seaside restaurants to the marinas and small watercraft that head out deeper into the waters.

Find Your Perfect Marathon Hotel

Marathon is a very family-orientated place, and you will have no problems finding the perfect accommodation to suit. Tropical resorts cater to families, and there are lovely beachside inns, small boutique hotels and budget-friendly accommodation, too. And in Marathon, spectacular sea views come as standard.

Soak up the Old Keys Lifestyle in Marathon

There is a warm and friendly vibe in Marathon, where the values and traditions of the past still play an important role in the culture. Annual seafood festivals honour the region’s long fishing legacy, which dates back to the 1800s, and there are boat parades during the warm winter holidays.

Enjoy hearty meals in Marathon’s beachside restaurants and lazy cocktails on the sand. There is a number of worthy historic sights to seek out, too. But start with the Old Seven Mile Bridge, considered a true feat of engineering and architecture when it was built in 1912.

An Eco-Destination

Enjoy water activities galore, from scuba diving and snorkelling on the pristine reef, to sailing, paddleboarding and kayaking. The Marathon keys are also an eco-tourist’s dream, with nature activities aplenty.

Visit turtles at the world’s only veterinary sea turtle hospital and see dolphins in the not-for-profit Dolphin Research Centre, an important education and research facility. Children will enjoy the 200,000-gallon saltwater aquarium at the Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters and getting back to nature at the Crane Point Museum, Nature Centre and Historic Site, where they can wander through a tropical hardwood grove. Make sure you save some time to lounge about on the perfect stretch of sand at Sombrero Beach.
