Pocket Guide: Islamorada

Islamorada: A Village of Islands

Islamorada is not one place, but a string of picture-perfect islands joined by the Overseas Highway that stretch through the blue Florida seas. Together the islands, which include Plantation Key, Windley Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, Craig Key and Fiesta Key, are known affectionately as a Village of Islands, their culture and vibe one and the same. Here, life revolves around the water, so whether you prefer to be in it, under it, on it or gazing at it, you’ll find your very own slice of heaven.

What to Expect from Upmarket Islamorada

Luxury resorts and inns steeped in character abound on the keys that make up Islamorada. It is considered an upmarket destination within the Florida Keys, and the range of sophisticated accommodation certainly shows this.

Enjoy tropical gardens and brightly coloured bougainvillea at boutique three- and four-star hotels, and plush resorts that boast spas and impressive sea views. You’ll also find more affordable options, too, where comfort and hospitality come hand in hand with the laid-back island charm that the Florida Keys are known for.

The Sportfishing Capital of the World

For over a century, anglers have been lured to the waters off Islamorada to try their hand at some of the planet’s most exciting deep-sea fishing. The waters are full of huge trophy fish, and you will find dozens of marinas offering crewed charter fishing boats that can take you out into the deep blue.

If aquarium-style fish-watching is more your thing, try scuba diving and snorkelling in the two state-park islands of Indian Key and Lignumvitae Key, which are accessible only by boat.

Shopping and Dining in the Islamorada

It comes as no surprise that Islamorada is good at seafood. The freshest catches of the day are cooked up into wholesome, hearty dishes at family-run restaurants, whose waterfront terraces offer romantic sunset dining.

Add to that the art galleries of the Morada Way Arts and Cultural District, and the boutiques selling bespoke jewellery, local crafts and beach-glam clothing, and you’ll have plenty to keep you entertained away from the sea in Islamorada.
