Flights to Key West International Airport

Key West is the southernmost island in the 100-mile-long archipelago that makes up the Florida Keys. Key West is the most well-known of these small islands and has its own distinct personality. It is famous for its ‘anything goes’ attitude and has a laid-back, quirky charm – and the latter could also be said to describe Key West International Airport.

Despite completing a major expansion project in 2009 that doubled the size of the airport from its original 1950s footprint, Key West International covers just 300 acres. This tiny airport, among the smallest commercial airports in the United States, uses the old half for arrivals and the newer part for departures. In total, it averages a maximum of 400,000 passengers a year.

At just less than a mile long, the airport’s one-and-only runway is about as little as they come. As a result, departing flights often have weight restrictions in place. Be sure to book a window seat for flights on to this tiny runway. That way, you will be treated to views of the water surrounding the island as you land.

Facilities at Key West International Airport

Key West International’s size is what makes it both quirky and charming. You’ll step directly on to the runway and can be collecting your baggage in record time. It is just a short walk from the plane door to baggage claim and to everything else inside the building. The baggage carousel, tourist information desk and car rental points are all within feet of each other.

When it’s time to leave, you also won’t have any trouble finding your way around the airport either. There’s just one restaurant, a pair of bars and a couple of gift shops in which to spend your last hours in Key West.

Flying to Key West from the UK

There are no direct flights to Key West International Airport from the UK. Flights from the UK to Key West usually connect via other US states via elsewhere or, most commonly, from other cities in Florida, such as Miami. Connecting flights from the UK to Key West are available from a number of airlines.

Hotels in Key West

Onward travel from Key West International Airport is usually via hotel-run transfers, which you arrange in advance with your hotel or guesthouse in Key West, if it offers them. Alternatively, local bus and taxi services are both available. Neither option will cost you much, as all of the Key West hotels and top attractions are just a couple of miles east of the airport.

There is a huge collection of hotels in Key West. Think beach bungalows, tiny cottages, harbour-front suites. Whether you want a low-key hostel or five-star resort with luxury suites and poolside cabanas, there is accommodation in every price bracket. And wherever you check in on this little island, you can be there in less than 20 minutes of leaving Key West International Airport.
