The Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovil has collections representing the Royal Navy's flying arm. It's one of four Royal Navy museums, the other three representing other arms of the service. On a trip to this part of Wessex, stay at a local Somerset guesthouse or hotel and be sure to pop along to see the excellent displays.

The museum has four huge halls and a collection of more than 90 aircraft. There are also 30,000 separate artefacts on display, along with an archive of two million records. The Fleet Air Arm Museum is in fact the biggest museum in the world devoted exclusively to naval aviation. The road network in Yeovil is excellent and you can get here easily from your Somerset hotel or other accommodation by turning off the B3151 near Ilchester. There are great things to do here for all ages, so it's a brilliant destination for a day out wherever you happen to be based. This is the biggest naval aircraft collection in Europe, and apart from other attractions you can sit in the cockpit of Britain's first Concorde.

The Aircraft Carrier Experience is the centrepiece of this state-of-the-art museum and great fun for all ages, as well as being an educational experience. It has an HMS Ark Royal replica flight deck in which you can 'land' a helicopter using computerised simulations. With two enormous projection screens and 10 aircraft to handle, you'll get a glimpse into the world of the servicemen whose job this is in the real world, and appreciate the diverse skills they must master. The sound effects are pretty dramatic too, and you'll really feel that you're on that deck. Surrounded by strike bombers and interceptor fighters, and with the wind whipping your hair, there's nothing like it for sheer authenticity!
Be sure to visit the Fleet Air Arm Museum when you're passing through Yeovil for your Somerset hotel and enjoy an enjoyable and educational day out with all the family. There's nothing quite like it.
