Pocket Guide: Saxmundham Dunwich Museum Hotels

Dunwich Museum tells the fascinating story of Dunwich on the Suffolk Coast, from Anglo Saxon times to the present day. Back in the first millennium, Dunwich was the capital of the Kingdom of the East Angles, a key harbour and international port. Sadly, coastal erosion has meant that much of Dunwich has long since fallen into the sea! However, it is at least some consolation that much of Dunwich's long heritage has been preserved at Dunwich Museum, which is a must-see attraction if you're staying in any hotels on the Suffolk Coast.

Discover What Happened to Dunwich from Suffolk Hotels

Back in the 12th Century Dunwich was an international trading port to rival London, yet today it is a quaint fishing village home to around 100 residents. What happened? The short answer is that the original town fell into the sea, Of course, there's a lot more to be said about Dunwich's history and plenty to discover at Dunwich Museum. As well as artefacts like the alderman's seal and mace, the museum regularly runs tours, special events and history trails - making it a fun, informative day out if you're staying in hotels in Suffolk.

Easily Reached from Hotels in Suffolk

The museum is open from March to October every year, so if you want to visit and are staying in a hotel in Suffolk you should time your holiday accordingly. There are several quality hotels and guesthouses nearby, including Trustans Barn located in Saxmundham, just a couple of miles from Dunwich. The nearest train station to the museum is over four miles away, however Dunwich is easily reached by car, with a large free car park by the beach.

While much of Dunwich may now be underwater, what remains is a lovely quaint village on the Suffolk coast that's popular with visitors. As well as the fascinating Dunwich Museum, the area boasts some beautiful natural habitats, notably Dunwich Heath, a tranquil beach and numerous historic landmarks dotted around the place, such as Greyfriars Priory. This peaceful, picturesque village is a great place for a family day out, with lots to discover and, if you're very lucky, you might even spot some of Britain's rarest species, such as red deer, adders or the Dartford warbler.
