Norfolk is a stunning rural county which attracts thousands of holidaymakers throughout the year. This expansive county has a great deal to offer tourists, from the tranquillity of the Norfolk Broads to the ambience and excitement of Norwich city centre, all located under Norfolk's legendary 'big skies'! Dotted around the county, there are a number of historically interesting sites. One such site is Dereham Windmill - the last remaining tower mill in the area. Midway between Norwich and Norfolk Broads, the tower mill is easily accessible from hotels in just about every corner of Norfolk.
Dereham Windmill was constructed back in 1836 by the millwright James Hardy. The mill features a boat-shaped cap and an impressive six blade fantail. The five storey structure is the only remaining one of its type in or around Dereham, making it a particularly special sight. The Grade II listed structure stands 42 feet tall.
As it's such a special site in the heart of Norfolk, the local community recently resolved to restore the mill, transforming it into a functional public space. Today, the completed project sees Dereham Windmill operating as a community exhibition centre. As well as showing the works of local artists, the mill features a community hall and coffee shop, both of which are available to hire for small events.
The windmill's location in the very heart of the county means that it's close to all of the best hotels in Norfolk. That said, visitors to the mill don't need to leave Dereham too far behind to find some exquisite accommodation. The Glendower House Apartments are situated in the centre of Dereham, offering comfortable rooms in one of the most beautiful parts of Norfolk. This is a great spot from which to explore Norfolk, either by car or on foot.
Another great way to make the most of Norfolk's stunning countryside is to book a tee time at any one of the county's many golf courses. The Barnham Broom Hotel allows visitors to tee off within the grounds of their hotel. The four-star hotel isn't far from Dereham Windmill, and also offers an impressive indoor pool and an array of spa treatments and facilities.
