The county of Norfolk is a favourite destination among UK holidaymakers. From the rural delights of the low-lying countryside to the charming coastal towns and the historic centre of Norwich, there's something here to suit travellers of every taste. Lovers of history will head straight for Norwich - the county's only city. From museums to still-standing artefacts, there's plenty to see and even more to learn. One of the city's most fascinating landmarks is Cow Tower, which sits in the north-east of Norwich. Fortunately for visitors, there are plenty of excellent hotels and guesthouses nearby.
Cow Tower is an historic artillery tower, originally built to defend the city of Norwich from French attack and domestic rebels. The structure went up between 1398 and 1399 and still stands proudly today on the banks of the River Wensum. The English Heritage site is free to visit, bringing in history lovers from across the globe.
The three storey building stands at almost 50 feet tall, providing a powerful vantage point which looks out across the river, on the city's edge. Despite being one of the earliest of its kind, Cow Tower remains in good condition, giving visitors a real insight into the city's past.
Cow Tower sits in the north-east of the city, not at all far from the centre. This means that visitors are also within easy reach of many of the Norwich's finest attractions. The famous Cathedral is just a short walk away, as are a number of great riverside bars and restaurants. Heading towards the west of town, visitors can find a number of the city's theatre venues.
Norwich is home to some of the best hotels in Norfolk, suiting every taste and budget. The Fishersgate Apartments offer a self-catering option on the north side of the River Wensum. Cow Tower is just a short walk away. Those who prefer to travel by car can enjoy free parking nearby.
Following the river south from Cow Tower, visitors will soon stumble upon both the Central Hotel and the Riverside Hotel Bed and Breakfast. Both options provide an excellent central location, with affordable rates.
