Pocket Guide: Colonial District

The Colonial District, especially along downtown Singapore’s famous Beach Road, is the island’s most historically important area. It was in this area that Sir Stamford Raffles not only settled Singapore, but also founded the city. Once fronting the beach, this district is part of Singapore’s sparkling downtown area, and is home to many famous landmarks, restaurants and shopping hotspots.

Don’t Miss

Several important landmarks reside within the Colonial District – Beach Road area. This is one of the busiest parts of Singapore day and night.

Visiting the beautiful Raffles Hotel is a must for all tourists. This historic gem of Singapore has been standing since 1887, and has managed to remain a colonial masterpiece. Just walking through the heritage-drenched halls is enough to keep tourists entertained. However, there is also a Victorian-styled theatre and impressive courtyard to see.

Take a short walk to the Riverside area and enjoy a charming boat ride through Singapore’s oldest district. This is a particularly popular spot to explore at night too, as the river banks become alive with socialisers, and the Marina Bay is lit up from every direction.

One of the more interesting religious sites in the city is Masjid Hajjah Fatimah Mosque, which rests in the Kallang Planning Area. Tourists need to remember that this site is regularly used by worshippers, so noise levels should be at a minimum and dress should be suitable. The architecture is a mix of both Islamic and European style, making it a unique mosque.
