View these elegant public rooms and explore the unique Fashion Museum set on the lower ground floor. Opened in 1771, the Assembly Rooms were the place where Bath socialites met to play cards, waltz or enjoy classical concerts. In their heyday, the rooms were frequented by celebrated artists and authors, such as Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. The card room, ballroom and tearoom have been restored and are open to the public. Be sure to admire the rooms’ gorgeous cut-glass chandeliers, which are 18th-century originals. Don’t miss the Fashion Museum, which is found on the building’s lower level. Opened in 1963, this museum began as an exhibition of scholar Doris Langley Moore’s private collection. Today it exhibits clothing from Jacobean times up to the latest Milanese designs. The exhibitions are ever changing, with only a portion of the museum’s 80,000 objects on display at any one time. Admire the hats, accessories, jewellery and clothing that have been popular with men and women over the centuries. Look for Victorian nightdresses and gaudy Georgian court dresses with their extra-wide skirts. Watch for the “Dress of the Year” display, which has highlighted some of the most innovative creations of the fashion industry since the museum opened. Every year, a different fashion expert is asked to choose the year’s most exciting or characteristic outfit for display in the museum. Try on replica Victorian clothing in the museum’s dressing up area. You’ll find children’s and adult’s coats, hats, dresses and bonnets, along with a Victorian street scene backdrop where you can pose for photos. The Bath Assembly Rooms are included in the admission price for the Fashion Museum. They are rented out for occasional functions, so check they are open before you go to avoid disappointment. (470 reviews) This property is close to Paddington Station and is how we arrived in London. We arrived early and the staff was willing to hold our luggage for us. Incidentally, Expedia says to call ahead or contact the property. There’s no need for that. The property is prepared for you as long as you book through Expedia. The room was small, directly above the ground floor pub. A couple of nights were noisy for a while, but the pub closes at midnight so it wasn’t really an issue. Our room was small but clean. The restroom was really small but adequate. I couldn’t figure out the thermostat and couldn’t cool the room enough even though it is air conditioned. The bathroom got pretty warm because of poor ventilation. That was the biggest negative. The breakfast provided was what I would classify as light with the only warm option as toast, tea, and coffee. Still, it was fine and it was enough to start the day. The staff was always pleasant and welcoming. There is a bus stop near the hotel. It was convenient and we used that method of transportation often. The Edgeware Street Station is about an 8-minute walk down the road and we used that tube stop quite a bit. The neighborhood is a near a working-class commercial area and safe enough for us—we experienced no issues. This was a good value. It’s not fancy or big but I’d go there again. Not with kids, though. Just me and my wife. (110 reviews) The room was quiet but needs to be updated . The bedsheets were clean, the TV worked, the bathrooms were terribly small. The barn door to the bathroom did not work properly and it was right across from our bed. The front desk staff was helpful. The housekeeping service was okay. It took 30-45 mins for an iron and a bottle of water. The lobby was beautiful. If they renovated the rooms like the lobby, I would come back.
