Pocket Guide: Aci Castello

Explore the region around by Catania with a visit to the seaside town of Aci Castello. It’s just under six miles up the coast, and makes an appealing destination for a day trip from the city.

What to See in Aci Castello

As you can guess from the name, Aci Castello is dominated by an imposing castle. Towering over the sea on a rocky outcrop is an 11th-century castle built by the Normans on a site where a fort had been built in the seventh century by the Byzantines. It’s the biggest attraction in Aci Castello, and now houses an archaeological museum. It’s worth the small entrance fee just to see the views from the castle.

Aci Castello seems to blend seamlessly into its neighbour, Aci Trezza, which has a lively harbour as well as some attractive beaches. This part of Sicily’s eastern coast is nicknamed the Cyclops Coast because of the giant rocks in the sea facing Aci Trezza. Legend has it that these rocks, called faraglioni, were thrown by the angry Cyclops in Homer’s Odyssey.

Where to Stay in Aci Castello

There’s a varied choice of hotels in Aci Castello. You can stay in a modern resort with an outdoor pool, or perhaps an apartment in the heart of the village. A countryside B&B makes for a relaxing stay, as does a beachfront hotel with wonderful views of the sea. There are also hotels in neighbouring seaside towns within easy reach of Aci Castello.

Where and What to Eat in Aci Castello

Aci Castello makes excellent use of its coastal location, with fresh seafood and fish appearing on many of the restaurant menus. Classic seafood pasta dishes include linguine with clams, as well as squid-ink pasta and spaghetti with sardines – pasta con le sarde, it’s called. Then again, if all you want is a pizza, there are plenty of restaurants in Aci Castello that make gorgeous thin-crust pizzas.

Aci Castello is a laid-back town with plenty of informal restaurants and trattorias. Head to the waterfront for lunch or dinner in a magical seaside setting on a shaded terrace before retiring to your hotel for a nice rest.
