South Yorkshire is without doubt one of the United Kingdom's most beautiful counties. Sitting to the east of the Pennines, the landlocked county is a treasure trove for keen walkers, photographers and lovers of the great outdoors. Behind the abundant and dazzling natural beauty of South Yorkshire, though, lies a rich and interesting industrial history. This history is kept alive by the numerous historical attractions dotted around South Yorkshire. Among the most popular is Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet. Located in the south of Sheffield, the attraction is close to some spectacular hotels.
Sheffield is known around the world as 'The Steel City'. Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is part of a small complex of museums in the south of the city which offer visitors a rare insight into how Sheffield built up such a reputation for steel production.
While parts of the steel working site date back as far as the 13th Century, Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet dates to the 18th Century. At its peak, the steelworks was the largest water-powered industrial suite on the River Sheaf.
The history of Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is more than mere words on paper. Following a colossal regeneration project, the attraction now offers plenty to see and do. Visitors to the Grade I and II Listed buildings on the river are treated to demonstrations of traditional crafts in the learning centre, and there are regular workshops, as well as a café and in-house art gallery.
The former steelworks is located in the south of Sheffield, the major city of the county. Within easy reach are some of the finest hotels in South Yorkshire, spanning guesthouses, B&Bs and luxury hotels.
The Premier Inn in Sheffield city centre is both reasonably priced and hugely convenient. In addition to Abbeydale, guests are close to all of Sheffield's premier attractions. There's also parking available for guests.
The Copthorne Hotel is located a little further out from the city centre, but is closer to the steelworks. The family-friendly hotel boasts a full fitness suite, its own bar and free WiFi throughout the hotel.
