Cape Verde: Tips

“Being a collection of islands is one very attractive aspect of Cape Verde. Each island has its own unique personality and as a result the variety of things you can experience within the country is phenomenal. However, that positive can also make add a challenge to see every aspect of Cape Verde that appeals to you. Flights and ferries connect all of the inhabited islands and prices are generally very reasonable. Some ferries have a reputation as potentially infrequent and unreliable and it is best to plan accordingly. The ferry I caught between São Vicente and Santo Antão, the Mar d’ Canal ARMAS, was comfortable, on schedule in both directions and allowed enough time to explore Santo Antão if your time is limited.

Exploring individual towns by foot is to be immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of Cape Verde. If you have longer distances to travel, or are exhausted after a day of hiking or dancing taxis are easy to come by and relatively inexpensive. Whether by plane, boat or your own feet travelling around Cape Verde to find your next adventure is varied and exciting.

2) There are more Cape Verde citizens living in other countries around the world thanks there are in the archipelago. These populations of citizens are recognized as important and can even elect their own representative to the National Assembly.

3) Locals speak Creole and predominantly use Portuguese in formal situations or to talk to people from other islands as there is more variation between the Creole spoken on the islands than to Portuguese.”
