Day 1: Evening

When you arrive in New York, get settled in your hotel and then head out to dinner. You can try Bolivian Llama Party, a counter-service spot with Bolivian cuisine that will satisfy your hunger. After dinner, you can visit a night market for a mix of nightlife and shopping. Places like the Brooklyn Bazaar and Queens Night Market mix stalls of food, clothing, antiques and accessories with live music, dancing, drinks and karaoke.

Depending on when you visit, you could also catch one of the famed shows on Broadway or an exciting sports event. New York is home to many professional teams, such as the NFL’s New York Giants, the NHL’s New York Rangers and New York Islanders, and the MLB’s New York Yankees and New York Mets.

Day 2: Morning and Afternoon

Because it’s your first full day in the city, you’re probably eager to get out and see the attractions. Start with an on-the-go breakfast at Absolute Bagels, an Upper West Side bakery and bagel shop with a variety of bagel and cream cheese options.

After breakfast, you can start sightseeing. Hop on the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty and New York’s other famous landmarks from the water. It’s not only free, but it’ll spare you a lot of time waiting in line. You could also walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to take in the views. For lunch, stop in Liebman’s Deli, a Jewish deli with a diner-style atmosphere. You can get huge sandwiches and hearty meats like corned beef and pastrami.

On your second night in the city, start with dinner at Africa Kine, a Senegalese restaurant with staples like stuffed fish with vegetables and rice, and lamb or chicken with peanut sauce. After eating, you can take some time to explore New York City’s famous museums after dark. You’ll not only be free from crowds, but you may be able to score free admission to some of the top museums in the city, such as the Museum of Modern Art or the Rubin Museum of Art.

The late morning is a good time to explore Central Park, one of New York’s most popular attractions. You could walk or bike around the massive green space, and if you’re bringing the kids, you could spend a few hours checking out the animals at the Central Park Zoo.

Have lunch at La Morada, an Oaxacan restaurant with mole options like mole verde and mole pipian. You could also try Gregory’s 26 Corner Taverna, a Greek restaurant with delicious, authentic Greek recipes.
