Pocket Guide: Viareggio

What Can I Expect from a Stay in Viareggio?

The second largest city in the province of Lucca, Viareggio is a popular seaside resort with an attractive stretch of beach and numerous grand waterfront hotels. Lucca’s original and only port, Viareggio was founded in the early 16th century. You can get a sense of the town’s history by visiting the Torre Matilde – one of the original buildings from that period.

Stay in Viareggio for sun and sand, and use the city as a base for exploring Lucca’s historic centre, which is only 30 minutes’ drive away. The resorts that line Viareggio’s palm-dotted promenade boast sea views and opulent furnishings, while the quaint B&Bs in the streets behind the main boardwalk offer a taste of Tuscan hospitality.

Stay near Viareggio's Shopping and Beaches

Take a stroll along Viareggio’s main promenade, La Passeggiata, with its designer shops, restaurants and bars, or enjoy an al fresco coffee. You’ll also find many of the city’s best gelaterias here, serving up scoops of all flavours. Once a week La Passeggiata hosts Viareggio’s flea market, where you can pick up souvenirs and bargains.

The beaches of Viareggio are all accessed via La Passeggiata and run by private beach clubs, who offer rental beach chairs and parasols. The beaches are all clean and well-run, and most also include changing facilities and snack bars. If you’re staying at one of Viareggio’s beach hotels then you can sometimes get discounts on these services.

Experience Viareggio’s Vibrant Carnival Celebrations

Viareggio is most famous for its carnival celebrations, which take place every year in the four weeks before Lent. Considered one of the best and most exciting carnival celebrations in Europe, the Carnevale di Viareggio includes a series of parades featuring intricate floats and papier mache masks.

Stay in one of the three-star and four-star hotels along the main promenade to be in the heart of the action during Viareggio’s carnival season. If you’re not in Viareggio during the festivities then you can still take a trip to the Cittadella del Carnevale – a museum where the carnival floats are stored.

Visit Viareggio for a Tuscan trip with sun, sea, history and the best of Italian culture.
