Pocket Guide: Forte dei Marmi

Stay in the Beach Resort of Forte dei Marmi

Popular with the Italian elite and international celebrities, Forte dei Marmi is an attractive seaside city with an excellent range of accommodation, from cheap hotels to fashionable luxury properties. Located on the Tuscan coast, just 40 minutes from the historic city of Lucca, Forte dei Marmi was created around the turn of the 20th century, becoming one of the first and most fashionable beach resorts in Italy.

These days, Forte dei Marmi still attracts an exclusive crowd, but you don’t have to own your own football club to enjoy the range of hotels and villas that line the waterfront.

The name Forte dei Marmi means ‘fort of the marbles’ in Italian, and originates from the fort that sits in the centre of the city. Built in 1788, the fort was originally used to defend the coastline from attack, but went on to become a storage facility for the marble that was quarried in the nearby Apuan Alps.

Hotels near the Shopping and Sunbathing of Forte Dei Marmi

Several of Forte dei Marmi’s popular hotels are clustered around Piazza Marconi, where the city’s weekly market is held. With many designer stores across the city (think Prada, Versace and Armani), the market often sells discount designer clothing, leather goods and cashmere, making it the perfect place to bag a high-quality bargain.

Most of Forte dei Marmi’s seven-mile stretch of beach is privately owned by clubs and the four-star and five-star hotels that border the seafront. Hire beach chairs and umbrellas for extra comfort here, or go for larger private cabanas for an exclusive seaside treat. Then enjoy a light lunch with a sea-view at one of the many beachside cafes.

Culinary Specialities in Forte Dei Marmi

Despite the wealth of upscale restaurants in Forte dei Marmi, many visitors come here to sample one of the city’s simplest treats – visit a bakery to try freshly baked focaccia to eat like a local. Look for one with queues; these tend to serve the freshest and most delicious bread.

Book a hotel in Forte dei Marmi for a holiday that combines sun, sea and the best of Italy’s famous cuisine.
