Popular sights around Uithoorn

Uithoorn is home to a few important (and historic) sights. Two churches, the old train station building and a former fortress hailing from 1880. The Thamen church might be the most important one. The small church is located in a beautiful area and now mostly used for events as fashion shows, weddings, parties or markets. The Schanskerk is not used anymore. The building had even declined so much, that it became a danger to people living and working around the building. Since it is a monument, a foundation is now working to save the church and maintain it. The former train station in Uithoorn is also a sight for architecture and history lovers. It was built in 1911, but closed as a station in 1986. It is now a restaurant.

Besides all that, Uithoorn is also part of a defensive line around Amsterdam. The line is located at 15 to 20 kilometres outside of Amsterdam, is 135 kilometres long and holds 45 fortresses. It was built between 1880 and 1920. It was meant mostly as a water line: in case enemies would come close, area’s around Amsterdam would be flooded so the people could hide in Amsterdam and the enemies could not come closer. The fortresses were placed on locations where for example the enemy could use a boat. There are a few fortresses around Uithoorn, the closest one being Fort bij Uithoorn, or usually named Fort Amstelhoek. The fortress can only be visited during three weekends in September and is closed otherwise.

Besides historical buildings, there is also some nature around Uithoorn. The city is surrounded by agricultural lands and borders on the river the Amstel that flows all the way to Amsterdam. Locals go to the Zijdelmeer and Amsterdamse Bos to enjoy the nature, especially runners and bikers.

As for activities like shopping, going out for dinner or enjoying the weather: the people in Uithoorn have several options. Within the town, there are some shops at Amstelplein. From Amsterplein, they go to ‘Het oude dorp’ (as they call it), a boulevard with restaurants, cafés and terraces. They also visit Hoofddorp for its restaurants, cinema and to go shopping. Thanks to its proximity to Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands is also an option for any activity.
