Bedfordshire is a county best known for its delightful stretches of stunning natural countryside. This beautiful, rural county attracts a large number of visitors each year from all around the world. The handful of charming and busy towns around the county play host to some fascinating attractions, completing the package. The Swiss Garden at Shuttleworth is one of the most enchanting attractions in the county. There also plenty of exquisite hotels in the surrounding area, making it a welcome addition to visitors' itineraries.
A Unique Outdoor Space
While many visitors to Bedfordshire come to the county for the untouched countryside, the Swiss Garden at Shuttleworth is an equally magical outdoor sight, crafted carefully by man.
The Swiss Garden was put together by the eccentric and wealthy Lord Ongley between the years 1824 and 1832. At great expense, he created a singular landscape which mirrored the topography of Switzerland to a greater degree of accuracy than you'd think imaginable in a county just a few miles from the centre of London! To complete the eccentric project, Ongley used to host large parties with Swiss themes. Reportedly, his servants were required to dress up in Swiss costumes for the duration of the parties.
Also at Shuttleworth
The Shuttleworth estate comprises plenty more than just the Swiss Garden. The site also features a stunning Victorian mansion and the impressive Shuttleworth Collection. The Shuttleworth Collection houses a huge number of vintage aircraft, motorcars and bikes collected by an enthusiastic and wealthy aviator in the 1920s. The collection has been open to the public since 1963.
