"The bedrooms were clean and pretty standard but little things needed attention like the sash window would open but not stay open, nowhere to hang a towel and the sliding door was difficult to operate and lock. The basin was tiny. The public rooms were not very clean and a duster could have been useful as could a mop on step edges. I don’t think the bar had been wiped overnight. Pretty basic but ok for a couple of nights. Staff mostly friendly and some food ok, other things pretty poor with items missing from the description on the menu."

"I rarely leave negative reviews for independent B&Bs, but this stay was extremely disappointing. The room I was allocated was not the room type I had booked. It was advertised as a double room but was actually two single beds pushed together, leaving an uncomfortable gap between them. The room itself had several maintenance issues. There was a bad smell coming from the drain, the TV lost signal for most of our stay, the blind was broken and permanently stuck open, and the ground-floor window was broken and could be opened from outside, creating a genuine security concern. What made the experience particularly frustrating was the complete lack of staff presence. I reported the issues on the first morning and was told someone would get back to me. Nobody ever did. No one inspected the room, offered an alternative, or even provided an update. In fact, staff were so absent that we only saw someone a couple of times during the entire stay. The whole place had a strange atmosphere because there was rarely anybody around. There is supposedly a bar and kitchen on site, but these might as well not exist if there is nobody available to serve guests or assist with problems. I appreciate that maintenance issues can happen, but ignoring guests when those issues are reported is not acceptable. The lack of customer service, combined with the poor condition of the room, meant this was not an enjoyable stay and certainly not good value for money."

"We had a lovely stay here. Our room was a good size, as was the bathroom, including a jacuzzi bath. We enjoyed the little extras, such as fruit and cookies and bottled water. The bed was really comfortable and we had everything we needed. The hotel is in a good location to enjoy Hadrians wall and the roman forts, also the Sycamore Gap walk. The food and service at breakfast and dinner was very good. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. There is also a star gazing observatory on site, which we have enjoyed on a previous visit."

"We checked in late evening, staff were friendly. Atmosphere was quiet in the bar area, locals were friendly, drinks reasonably priced. Room was clean and spacious, bathroom was modern, there are no lifts and lots of stairs, so no go if you have mobility issues. Breakfast was nice, the only gripe I have is that the bar and rooms looked dated, but I would stay again."

Balcary House Hotel

8/10 Good

"We had a beautiful quiet room overlooking the gardens. Breakfast was good - items such as eggs and tomatoes were fresh cooked and hot; meat products were sometimes lukewarm. Service was good. Just a bit disappointed that there was no availability of meals/dinner in the evening- a light lunch was available until 6pm. Would help residents to know this beforehand but that might put off people booking. Monday night was difficult with most eateries closed and we could only find a run of the mill Wetherspoons."
