"Very nice all-inclusive hotel, excellent staff!"
The Occidental is a fantastic non-luxurious, somewhat smaller all-inclusive hotel, with an excellent staff. Everyone I came in contact with was always friendly, helpful and smiling -- especially the two Carlos's and Manuel. For an all-inclusive hotel, the food selection and alcohol quality was awesome (the alcohol was strong!). They have two regular restaurants and a buffet with great food. Each place has new choices daily.
The rooms were very nice and mostly updated (new, clean bed linen and a flat screen TV), but not luxurious (as in no marble, travertine tile, etc.). However, they were very clean and comfortable, and the overall layout of the hotel provides a view of the ocean from just about every room.
This hotel has three pools: one for children, one main pool, and one adult pool. Very surprising to me was that the hotel staff actually helps ensure that anyone with children who "accidentally" finds their way into the adult pool, gets redirected to one of the other two pools.
I can't say enough about the staff and how pleasant, helpful and friendly they were. As with most hotels in Mexico, this one has a vacation club (timeshare), but aside from asking us if we went on the "tour" (meaning sales presentation), there was very little to no pressure to attend and/or buy.
The location is in Nuevo Varrata, close to the marina and Vallarta Aventures (for excursions).
I would strongly recommend this hotel to everyone.
