"The room was smart, and laundry was clean, charging points, lights easy and plentiful. There was a stain on the carpet which was obvious and off putting, and at 4:15am I could not get hot water in the bathroom tap! Coffee and milk were good and bed was pretty comfy-it was a hot room but I could open the window and not noisy so that was simple! We had a light meal the night before which was disappointing in terms of portion sizes and undercooked garlic bread, but puddings were yummy! So overall, I would stay in the room happily but would not head back to the pub for a dinner without persuasion!"

"I would not stay again, our double bedroom had very tired decor, peeling paint, lots of dust and cobwebs, and overlooked a flat roof/ fire escape. Seems like the room had been slapped with lots of green paint in attempts to modernise it. Not sure how the accommodation can be described as luxury. If we had been staying for more then one night I would have left early. The parking is very limited, but that is stated when booking. Staff at reception were friendly when booking in."

"After check in, we went to our room (140) which had a double bed in one room and 2 sofa beds in the adjoining room, lots of space for everyone! One of the sofa beds wasn’t made up so I asked reception for help. They quickly came along with bedding and we went for a swim before dinner. Dinner was served in the bar as there were too few guests to use the restaurant. The food was standard hotel price and quality, it filled a hole but wouldn’t be a reason to return. We returned to our room and despite being a bit too hot, we all slept well. We woke in the morning and fitted in another swim before breakfast. Someone had registered for breakfast under our room number - a non resident and his kids freeloading. My daughter began itching her arm but I thought nothing of it. Over the course of the next couple of hours she was itchy all over and when I looked she had red itchy spots all over both arms, her shoulders and back. I emailed the hotel to let them know so they could check the room/sofa bed and bedding but they haven’t replied. We were due to return on our way back home but have managed to cancel this. We are now out of pocket for antihistamine, creams and washing our clothing at 60 degrees but we learnt an important lesson. I have stayed in many hotels and never thought to check for such things. I don’t think I’ll ever sleep anywhere again without a mattress inspection. "

"The Speech house was our first stop in the UK after arriving from the US. Having never traveled to the UK before everything was new and different! The staff were extremely kind, helpful, gracious, patient and accommodating. We relied on them for information of all kinds and would have struggle mightily if not for them! The food was very good--beautifully presented and delicious. We were graciously upgraded to a larger cottage room which was a tremendous benefit since we stayed for a week. (Thank you Chaz!) The property is beautiful, historic, and interesting. The trails that were accessible directly from the Speech House were a real treat and perfect for us since we did not have a car. Internet and cell service were mostly only available in the Lodge, so we needed to readjust our thinking and adapt our normal routines, which is a good thing. In our room some of usual creature comforts were a little lacking, but being in the forest in such an historic place with wonderful people more than made up for that! We can highly recommend the Speech House, especially to foreign travelers. "
