Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Lorton?
The best area to stay in Lorton is the village centre itself, offering a quintessential Lakeland experience amidst stunning scenery.

Lorton village is located in the beautiful Lorton Valley, surrounded by fells and close to both Loweswater and Crummock Water. It's a small, quiet community with a village shop, a popular local pub, and several holiday cottages. The main road through the village, the B5292, connects you easily to nearby towns like Cockermouth. For those who appreciate outdoor activities, it's an ideal base.

Couples looking for a tranquil escape will find Lorton village perfect. You can enjoy scenic walks directly from your doorstep, perhaps a gentle stroll around Loweswater or a more challenging hike up Grasmoor. The local pub offers a welcoming spot for an evening meal, and the peaceful surroundings ensure a relaxing stay.

Families will also appreciate the village for its access to nature and a slower pace of life. There's plenty of open space for children to explore, and the proximity to the lakes means opportunities for paddling, wild swimming, or simply enjoying a picnic by the water.
When is the best time to go to Lorton?
The best time to go to Lorton is during the late spring, summer, or early autumn months, roughly from May to October, when the weather is most favourable for outdoor activities.

During these months, the Lake District National Park, where Lorton is situated, experiences milder temperatures and longer daylight hours. This makes it ideal for exploring the fells, enjoying lake cruises, or simply taking walks through the valleys. You'll find most local attractions, shops, and eateries operating at their full schedule.

Couples looking for a romantic escape will particularly enjoy the late spring and early autumn. The landscapes are stunning, with wildflowers blooming in May and June, or the golden hues of the fells in September and October. These periods often offer a quieter experience than the peak summer months, allowing for more peaceful walks and intimate dining.

For families, the summer months of July and August are perfect. The warmer weather is great for enjoying the lakes and forests, and there are often more organised activities available for children.
