Pocket Guide: Little Torch Key

Quiet and Tranquillity on Little Torch Key

Just 25 minutes’ drive from buzzing Key West, Little Torch Key is a tranquil escape from the lively hubbub of its more famous neighbour. Be one of the few visitors to make their way to this quiet and romantic little haven, and enjoy undeveloped backcountry, pristine reefs and quiet beaches.

Named after the torchwood tree, Little Torch Key is surrounded by the turquoise Florida sea just south of Big Pine Key and just a few miles away from the famous Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary.

Little Torch Key’s Hotels

Little Torch Key is a tiny slip of an island, and has just a handful of accommodation options. But you can choose from stilted beachfront apartments crafted from old fishing lodges and affordable laid-back resorts. Or if you’re looking to splurge, follow in the footsteps of celebrities and royals and splash out on a thatched-roof bungalow in an ultra-luxury resort on a private offshore islet.

Explore or Relax Little Torch Key

You can choose to do a lot on Little Torch Key or to do absolutely nothing at all. Recline in the Florida sun on a lounger and soak in the peace and quiet, or head off to explore your surroundings.

Discover the backcountry on a guided kayak tour, snorkel the secluded beaches or sign up for a scuba-diving adventure to Looe Key (named after a ship that wrecked on its reef in the 1800s). There are helicopter flights and seaplane experiences that will take you high above the island, but you could also give sky-diving and kiteboarding if you’re up for more adrenaline-pumping adventures.

The waters off Little Torch Key are teeming with big-game fish, and it is no surprise that the island is one of the Keys’ best sport-fishing destinations. Even former US President Harry S Truman was a frequent fisher here. Head for Dolphin Marina to rent or charter boats from which you can haul in giant sailfish, wahoo, kingfish, tarpons and barracuda.
