Pocket Guide: Hyannis

Hyannis on the southern side of Cape Cod was John F Kennedy’s summer home, and it’s easy to see why. An attractive village with some excellent beaches, Hyannis is also the port for boat trips to the fashionable nearby islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.

Hotels in Hyannis

In Hyannis, there are hotels to suit most budgets. Choose a traditional Cape Cod hotel with easy access to the beach, or opt for a beachfront hotel with an indoor pool. The town centre has historic B&Bs that are close Hyannis’s main attractions, and there’s also the option of booking a Hyannis hotel right on the harbourfront.

What to See in Hyannis

From your hotel, take a walk to the John F Kennedy Hyannis Museum, where you can get a better understanding on the President Kennedy through displays of mementoes and photos. While you’re there, check out the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame, which pays homage to the players in the oldest amateur baseball league in America. Many of Cape Cod Baseball League’s players went on to become stars in the Major League.

Cape Cod’s 100 or so antiques shops are renowned through the United States. Even if you haven’t got deep pockets, take a stroll along the Old King’s Highway, where there’s a fascinating collection of antiques shops, many of which are in handsome colonial houses. You’ll find everything from vintage kitsch and amusing collectibles to very fine objects and furniture.

What to Do in Hyannis

Spend a day away from your hotel’s pool and watch the windsurfers in action as they ride the waves on Kalmus Beach. If you’re travelling with kids, take them to the family-friendly Veterans Beach, which has children’s play areas as well as a memorial to John F Kennedy.

One of Hyannis’s highlights is the 6.5-mile Sandy Neck Beach, whose entire stretch is backed by high dunes and a salt marsh. If you want a break from sunbathing, take one of the hiking trails that cross the dunes and do a loop of the beach. For a fun afternoon out, take a boat to Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and watch the colony of whales frolicking.
