Pocket Guide: Chatham

Chatham is classic Cape Cod, with an old-fashioned main street of quaint shops and cafes. Chatham is on the peninsula’s south-eastern ‘elbow’ and is home to one of Cape Cod’s best-known landmarks – the Victorian lighthouse.

Hotels in Chatham

Chatham has several hotels, inns and guesthouses in and near the village. Choose from a selection of charming colonial inns that are within a short walk from the beaches. Some of Chatham’s hotels outdoor pools set in luxuriant gardens. Or you can stay in an attractive hotel right on beach. For more activity, choose a Chatham hotel with indoor pool and fitness centre.

What to Do in Chatham

Head out from your hotel and head for Chatham Lighthouse, which was built in 1878 and offers sweeping views of the coast. Then enjoy a visit to the Chatham Railroad Museum, which is in the original railway depot dating from 1887.

Nature lovers might enjoy the wild beauty of the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, which covers more than 7,000 acres and has nearly 300 species of birds. It’s a breath-taking place to visit during migration season, as the refuge is one of the most important areas along the US East Coast for migrating birds.

For a lively spectacle, head to the Chatham Fish Pier Market. Every afternoon, fishermen unload their daily catch at the pier, and you can have your pick of the freshest seafood cooked in the shack. Feast on giant lobster rolls and delicious fish chowder at a picnic table by the water’s edge. The pier is also an excellent spot to watch seals playing in the Atlantic, especially when they follow the fishing trawlers and try to nab some of the catch.

Beaches in Chatham

You don’t have to go far from your hotel to find superb beaches along Chatham’s 60 miles of shoreline. Lighthouse Beach, just below the lighthouse, is perfect for lazy strolls on beaches which seem to go on for ever. Hardings Beach is on Nantucket Sound, so the waters are warmer than on the Atlantic side. There’s also the Oyster Pond Beach, which offers tranquil swimming in a small inlet.
