Pocket Guide: Falmouth

Cape Cod’s second-largest town has about 70 miles of coastline, creeks and ponds making up its deeply indented coast. Falmouth’s arts scene is particularly lively, with a busy calendar of theatre and light-opera productions. Make a date for the Fourth of July fireworks, which are the largest in Cape Cod.

Where to Stay in Falmouth

You’ll find a good range of hotels and independent accommodation in Falmouth and nearby villages. Look for a place to stay in Falmouth’s historic centre and you can choose from a range of intimate, family-run inns that date back to the colonial era. If you want to stay near Falmouth’s coast, book a Falmouth hotel overlooking the harbour.

Beaches in Falmouth

There’s plenty of room for everyone on Falmouth’s longest beach, Menauhant Beach, on the southern side of the town. If your hotel is on Falmouth main street, you’re a short walk from Surf Drive Beach, which has full facilities and is popular with families.

Book a hotel in North Falmouth, and you’ll be near even more beaches, including Old Silver Beach. Let the kids loose among the tidal pools and rock jetties while you relax on the sands or take a dip in the warm waters.

What to Do in Falmouth

Ask your hotel in Falmouth to arrange a bike tour or rent your own bike and have a leisurely cycle ride along the Shining Sea Bikeway, which covers nearly 11 miles of Falmouth’s coast. Enjoy the views of the sea and the salt marshes as you cycle along a flat path that used to be a railway line. The route eventually leads to the quaint little village of Woods Hole, which not only runs ferries to Martha’s Vineyard but is also the inconspicuous home to one of the world’s most prestigious oceanographic institutes. Kids will love the Woods Hole Science Aquarium, which includes touch tanks.

Birdwatchers and families can explore the 45-acre Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary and its wooded nature trail. If you happen to be in Falmouth on a Thursday afternoon, visit its farmers’ market in Marine Park near the harbour. Taste the delicious home-grown fruit and vegetables by Cape Cod’s farmers, along with local wines, jams, honeys, flowers and much more.
