Pocket Guide: Halifax Halifax Piece Hall Hotels

Next time you're stuck for a suitable holiday destination, West Yorkshire can be recommended for its wonderful landscapes of river valleys, moorlands and high hills of the Pennines to the east, and equally for its great cities. Leeds and Bradford, Halifax and Wakefield are just a few of them, and all bear the marks of the region's extensive industrial heritage. Many of the cities here have iconic civic buildings which date to the period when West Yorkshire was a centre for textiles, and many stately homes in the area such as East Riddlesden Hall were built on the profits of trade. The famous Piece Hall in Halifax was built during this boom time, and it's worth a visit if you're based at a nearby Halfax hotel, guesthouse or B&B, or further afield in West Yorkshire.

West Yorkshire Hotels for The Piece Hall in Halifax

The Piece Hall was built in the 18th Century by Thomas Bradley and has a unique connection with Halifax's industrial past, as it was originally where the local wool merchants came to sell their 'pieces' of cloths, and hence also the name. The hall had no fewer than 315 connected Merchants' Rooms and this is where the hard trading was conducted between buyers and sellers. The architecture is suitably impressive, as befitted one of the powerhouses of the Industrial Revolution in these parts. The central courtyard is fashionably Italianate and massive, built by the old wool merchants and now beautifully restored to all its former glory. Pleasingly, Piece Hall is still a place of activity and trade, as the main market place of Halifax is located here and it's within easy walking distance of any hotel in the city of Halifax.

Visit Piece Hall in Halifax with a West Yorkshire Hotel

Piece Hall has had a chequered history since it was gifted to Halifax Corporation in 1871. For years it was a successful wholesale market, and then in 1927 it became a Grade 1 listed building. Opening again as a tourist attraction in 1976, it has recently been extensively redeveloped and now makes a varied and interesting venue to visit from your local Halifax hotel.
