Pocket Guide: Naples Fuorigrotta Hotels

Fuorigrotta is perhaps not the most obvious part of Naples to find a hotel in. Literally translated to ‘outside the grotto’ Fuorigrotta is a western suburb outside of Naples historic centre and all of its main attractions.

But, there are reasons to come here, not least its famous football stadium and several historical sites of note. An entrance to the Crypta Neapolitana, an ancient Roman tunnel running beneath Posillipo Hill and connecting Naples to the Phlegrean Fields (a volcanic area west of the city), was reopened recently, making it possible to walk a small section of the route.

A quiet, residential suburb compared to other parts of Naples, Fuorigrotta still has good public transport connections, with the added bonus of cheaper accommodation than central Naples. There are a good number of comfortable and simple three-star and four-star hotels here, offering every essential for your stay.

Football in Fuorigrotta

The most famous landmark in Fuorigrotta is Stadio San Paolo, the third-largest football stadium in Italy. Home to the Serie A team SSC Napoli, which Argentinian legend Diego Maradona once played for, the venue is also known for its participation in the 1990 World Cup, particularly the semi-final between Italy and Argentina.

Neapolitans are understandably passionate about their local team, and seeing a game here and basking in the atmosphere is a wonderful experience. View a schedule of upcoming Serie A, TIM Cup and Europa League matches on the stadium website and book your tickets.

Exploring Fuorigrotta Market

It’s not just the accommodation that is very budget-friendly in Fuorigrotta; most goods and services are too. For proof, look no further than Fuorigrotta Market, which is open daily from early morning to evening. Located in a modern complex with a roof covered in solar panels, this superb market has more than 300 stalls. Parking is available, too, so you can fill the boot of your rental car with supplies and head back to your self-catering accommodation.

The market carries possibly the best selection of products and prices in all of Naples. Seafood, fruit and vegetables, household products, clothes and jewellery can all be found here. Pop in and pick up a bargain.
