"We had the attic room and it's very spacious. The bedroom has a huge bed that is not too soft and we slept like the dead. Dual aspect with sky lights. Fan and extra soft cuddly blankets if needed. Hairdryer, ironing board, iron and microwave. However, the fridge was the reason I booked. A seating area where you can chill without a TV on and a small book shelf with a wide variety of books. We were very pleasantly surprised. Lindsay, the owner is a lovely fellow and you could just stop and talk...

Frequently asked questions

How much does a budget hotel in Devonport cost?
Budget hotel prices in Devonport vary, but you can find a great deal from £41 on Expedia. To find the cheapest budget hotels, be flexible with your dates—typically, off-peak and mid-week stays are cheaper. Which area of Devonport is best to stay in for cheap hotels?
For budget-conscious solo travellers seeking affordable accommodation in Devonport, focusing on areas slightly outside the immediate city centre, such as parts of Stonehouse and Stoke, often yields more economical options. These neighbourhoods, while not directly on the main tourist routes, offer good value and remain well-connected to the town's attractions.

Stonehouse, for example, is an area undergoing regeneration and provides a mix of guesthouses and smaller hotels that are typically more budget-friendly than those found closer to the waterfront. Solo travellers will find it easy to navigate, with local bus routes providing access to Plymouth city centre and the historic dockyard.

Similarly, Stoke, a more residential area, can offer quieter and more competitively priced guesthouses or bed and breakfasts. While a little further out, it still maintains good public transport links, allowing solo explorers to reach Devonport's main sights or venture into Plymouth without incurring significant travel costs.
When is the most affordable time to visit Devonport?
The most affordable time to visit Devonport is generally during the shoulder seasons, specifically late autumn (October to November) and early spring (March to April), outside of school holidays. During these periods, you'll find lower prices for accommodation and fewer crowds, making it easier to snag a good deal.

For solo travellers, these months offer a quieter experience, allowing for more relaxed exploration of the historic dockyard and surrounding areas without the summer rush. You might even find some local attractions offering off-peak discounts.

Families aiming to save money should consider visiting just before or after the main summer break, avoiding the peak prices and busy attractions.
Is Devonport a budget-friendly destination?
Yes, Devonport is a budget-friendly destination, especially for those looking to explore a historic naval town without breaking the bank. Its affordability stems from a good selection of free attractions and reasonable accommodation and dining options.

For solo travellers, staying in the heart of Devonport offers convenient access to its main sights. The historic dockyard area, while restricted, provides a fascinating backdrop to the town's naval heritage, and the surrounding streets are pleasant to explore on foot.

Couples can enjoy free activities like strolling through the well-maintained Devonport Park, offering lovely views and green spaces, or wandering around the Royal William Yard. The Yard, a stunning collection ofGrade I listed buildings, now houses independent shops, galleries, and eateries, and simply enjoying the architecture and waterfront views costs nothing. Dining in Devonport can be inexpensive, with local pubs and cafes offering good value meals. For a truly budget-friendly option, consider picking up local produce from a market or grocery store and having a picnic in one of the parks.

What free activities should we do in Devonport?
Devonport offers a delightful array of free activities, superb for budget-conscious solo travellers looking to explore its rich maritime history and natural beauty.

Start your exploration at the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre, where you can delve into centuries of naval history and discover the vital role the dockyard has played. While entry to the centre itself is free, it's worth checking their website for opening times as they can be seasonal. Afterwards, take a leisurely stroll through Devonport Park; it's a beautifully maintained Victorian park offering stunning views across the Tamar Estuary and features a charming bandstand, superb for a peaceful afternoon.

For those who enjoy coastal walks, the South West Coast Path runs directly through Devonport. You can pick up the path and walk towards Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park (accessible via a short ferry ride from Stonehouse, which does incur a small fee, but the park itself is free to enter). Here, explore formal gardens, woodland trails, and admire the historic folly buildings, all while enjoying breathtaking sea views. Alternatively, head towards Royal William Yard, a magnificent collection of Grade I listed buildings now transformed into a vibrant cultural hub.
Is it cheaper to book flights and a hotel in Devonport as a package?
Booking a hotel and flight package on Expedia can be cheaper than booking flights and hotels separately. Bundling can lead to significant savings, especially for international travel or when booking well in advance. However, savings vary depending on factors like destination, travel dates, and availability, so it's wise to compare options. With access to over 300,000 hotels worldwide, Expedia makes it easy to build the perfect travel package.
Can I cancel my budget hotel reservation on Expedia?
Many Expedia hotel reservations are refundable, provided that you cancel before the hotel's cancellation deadline. This is often within 24-48 hours of your scheduled arrival. Be sure to check your booking confirmation for the exact cancellation policy. For maximum flexibility, use Expedia's "Fully refundable property" filter during your search to find the right budget hotel in Devonport for you.
